A rootcanal treatment is necessary when the nerve of the tooth “died” and is necrotic. This can happen due to various reasons eg. Big cavity filled with bacteria that infiltrated the nerve canal, trauma to the tooth due to accident or very hard ‘biting’. Even severe erosion can cause exposure of the nerve.
The canal is cleaned prepped to be filled with a rubberish material known as Gutta percha. Before it is filled, we disinfect the root canal with lasers that open the tubules and also kill all the bacteria in the dentine.
All of this is done under magnification to see better.
It is a known fact that there is link between gum disease and heart diseases. It is paramount to see your oral hygienist every six months for a good cleaning and disinfection of the teeth. Untreated gum infection will eventually lead to periodontitis, where the bone around the teeth are broken down by the bacteria and can lead to tooth loss.
Periodontitis can be treated but there is a protocol and treatment plan that needs to be followed to get a successful outcome.
